| Electric motor break in:
For electric brushed motors, breaking in the motor involves seating in the brush properly to the comm. When the brush and comm combination is new, the contact area still need to be formed. To reduce the arching (which will enlarge the air gap on the comm and speeds up the deterioration of the motor), you want to run the motor at about 4,8V DC (4 cells NiMh) for about 8 minutes.
You can use the water dip method as well (4 minutes, 4 cells), however, unlike the silver cans, these have bearings. These you need to dry and relube after the water dipping method. Actually this is a better method, because dipping it in water: - The motor is spinning with load on it. - Water cleans the contact area (comm/brush) by transporting the dust away. - Water cools the motor. |
