Hey guys, I'm soon going to have enough money to either buy a TA05 and get it a few basic hop ups, or "aluminize" every part in my TT01E, or get a TA05 IFS, and maybe if I squeeze out every last penny, get a TA05 IFS version 2.

I know, skill and setup are equally, if not most important. I also know that it's best to stick to a TT01 when learning, but sooner or later I'm going to need a better kit, there's only so much a TT01 can do right?

Also, is the TA05 too old now? Are the spares running out?

Are you still confused? Hehe
I would go for the ta05.

Yes,the tt01 is a good chassis for beginners, but it wouldn't be a nad choice to move up to a mid-range chassis.

Tell me, what's holding you back from getting the ta05.
Parts are widely available.
Plus, there hasn't been any news of a 'ta06' coming out.
Infact, because of the ta05's success, tamiya just modifies the chassis to improve it a little more. (ie: version 2)
So why are you afraid in taking the jump?

With respect to all TT-01 owners....hopping up a TT-01 is like putting perfume on a pig....it's still a pig....

A TA-05 would be the better option. Adjustability and functionality are available out of the box....you dont NEED to even hop it up. Even the ball difs can be reversibly turned into a solid drive spool.

No CS, OD or any other TLA (three letter acronym) will help you drift better. No 'BLUE SHINY' bits are needed for what you are going to use it for. Even with the stock motor and ESC it is ENOUGH to learn. The only thing you would need is drift tires and if not supplied with the kit, ball bearings. Spend whatever available funds you have on decent radio gear and batt/chargers. Long after the car is destroyed, these items will still be at your disposal to use later.

The V2 version is more expensive and the differences are not all that, although some of them seem to be designed to increase the longevity of the car.

For the money, the TB-03 will also give you good value out of the box, and is shaft driven which means less stones in belts...

Last week I pulled two stones out of people's belts, and one out of a shaftie....

Thanks,
@Josh, it's just that, I'm sure TA05's will be discontinued soon, that means the spares will start running out. But I think that's just me being paranoid.

@Cathurga AND Josh, I know the OD is more for show then for performance. It's slower and often harder.
From what I've read, IFS does not help AT ALL. It's good looking, that's all. Even racers preffer the standard TA05 over the TA05 IFS. And when you crash hard (straight into something), you're going to have to repair tons of things with IFS.

Now the only 3 choices I have, are Cyclone S, TB03/TB03D, TA05.

What do you guys think is best out of the ones stated above?
I personally am not a big fan of the Cyclone S.

since you've added TB03/D chassis, I'd say you go for that..

if you have funds, take the upgraded one. if you're planning to get some hop-ups (as i'm guessing you would) it will turn out to be cheaper than getting the items one by one..

I actually voted for TA05v2 earlier because i have it as well and it's great.
But should you pick this, beware that not all parts that fits in v1 are in v2..
most are from TB03. so you have to check the manual.

good luck.

The performance of the tb03 and the ta05 are almost equal.
So picking either of these would be fine...

Don't worry about parts.
People with ta03's are still able to find parts.
And 'no'....i don't see the end of the ta05 chassis any time soon.

Can anyone tell me the bad bits about it?

@J.Drift, have you had any problems with yours?
Anyone know if any LHS sells TB03D's? And any idea about the price?

There are no bad bits with any car really, just areas of maintenance that require attention. In any shaft driven car you will encounter torque steer..(actually, even belt driven cars have it, but less pronounced) because the motor action is along the roll center of the car whereas belt drive is along the pitch line.
This does not mean that the car handles better/worse it just means that more attention needs to be paid when balancing it and also getting the bevel and ring gears to mesh right. Do it well and there is a lot less to maintain, and any chance of crap getting into belts/pulleys is eliminated.
I have never owned a belt drive, but have wanted to....badly. But in reflection, thos belts flying by all the wires and thing, coupled with the stone issue, led me back to a shaftie...I am just not careful enough with belts....
It is all a matter of choice, the shaft/belt debate has raged for years and still no clear winner has emerged....the simple fact is, on a prepared surface belt is preferred by racers. For bashing, the shafties are the popular ones....
My trusty old TB-02 got a bit of a stripdown last week, and the bevel/ring gears have not the slightest bit of wear, there was a little dirt in the boxes, but nothing that would trap a gear..so I am happy.
I also got a TB Evo 4 from tamiyausa for US$300 shipped, and for all the bling, carbon fiber and stuff included.....possibly the best value EVER for a TRF car.
In your case, TA05 or a TB03D would be a VERY good starting point. Adjustability out of the box, potential for upgrades, and availability of parts. Dont waste your funds on stuff you dont need....it is the biggest burden in this hobby, buying stuff you dont need....I know, I have done it.

Adbull,

I would probably lean more to the TB03-D, like Andy mentioned the belts and all the little stone where we play, can be more of a hazard on belt drives, saying that I managed to find a stone in my diff case on a TT01 after this weekends session.....in any case is had been designed and developed with drifting in mind!

I think both are great from an adjustability point of view so you cant go wrong either way......

TB03D in the black box is $149 on RCMart plus $30-$40 for shipping and bank charges...vs $214 for the upgraded one...not sure what the differences are but usually thes upgraded one are worth the extra cash as they come with loads of hopups...

Need to know how much the total cost will be if I buy the TB03D through JJ.
I'd love getting the uprgaded version, but I can't afford it. Unless I save up until 2011.

Why not just save up? It's more cost efffective rather buying hop ups later on.
While you're saving your cash, just practice with what you have....

Look at Eathan, he squeezed out the best out of his tt01.

Yeah, but there's only so much a tt01 can do...
I honestly wouldn't mind upgrading my TT01E, but I know that it just CAN'T compete with the big guns.
It's like throwing pebbles at a 1:1 army tank...You can paint the pebble blue, but you will get OWNED by the tank...
...Atleast that's how I think of it.

What you just said was either really deep, or confusing...
Hehe.
We can't really do anything if you've already made up your mind.

If you feel happier with hopping up your tt01, then by all means go ahead.
It's either you take the step or not.
Asking the same question over and over again isn't gonna lead anywhere.

Forgive me if I'm being a bit direct, i just feel that we're just going in circles.

We are going in circles Hopped up TT-01E vs TA05/TA05 IFS/TA05 IFS Version 2! Icon_eek
It makes me feel like I'm making progress...
The whole point of making this thread was to find out wether it is better to modify a TT01E than to buy a new kit.

Anyway I need some help...I just got my new 2.4 Ghz transmitter and reciever after my old one died at the last meet. It's the 3 channel, and it's awefully confusing.
It came with no instruction manual, and I've tried poking wires in all sorts of combinations, the third channel is a switch, press it once, if you've connected it to a servo, it rotates completely, if you press it again, it rotates completely in the other direction.
The second channel, I don't know what it's for. But if you connect the ESC to it, the car spins perfectly, if you connect the servo it, it works perfectly, but you have to turn using the trigger.
The first channel, I've got no clue what it's for. When you connect any of the wires in it...Nothing interesting happens. Although (I forgot what I did), I did hear a low frequency noise...

Help me......HELP ME....HEEEEYEEELP MEEE.....

channel 2: throttle (from ESC)

this is why i opt for "somehow" a known brand.. makes life easier.

which brand have you got? or do you still want to keep it a secret?
